Jordan Jones
Jor­dan Jones

Jor­dan Jones, founder and own­er of GenealogyMedia.com, is an expe­ri­enced geneal­o­gist, author, book design­er, pub­lish­er, web­mas­ter, and tech­nol­o­gist. He and has worked in sev­er­al tech­ni­cal roles includ­ing tech­ni­cal writer, doc­u­men­ta­tion pro­gram man­ag­er, doc­u­men­ta­tion man­ag­er, senior busi­ness archi­tect, and senior man­ag­er.

He received his BA in “Hon­ors in Eng­lish” with a minor in Phi­los­o­phy (magna cum laude) from Cal­i­for­nia State Uni­ver­si­ty (1987), North­ridge and his MA in Eng­lish from UC Davis (1991), where he received an hon­or­able men­tion in the Celeste Turn­er Wright / Acad­e­my of Amer­i­can Poets com­pe­ti­tion and a Grad­u­ate Human­i­ties Research Award, and served on the Eng­lish Grad­u­ate Stu­dent, Cre­ative Writ­ing, and Speak­ers Com­mit­tees.

He has pub­lished poet­ry, fic­tion, non-fic­tion, and works in trans­la­tion in numer­ous mag­a­zines and antholo­gies, and is the author of two books of poet­ry, Sand & Coal: Poems (Futharc Press, 1993) and The Wheel: Poems (Leap­ing Dog Press, 2005), both of which con­tain poems on fam­i­ly his­to­ry sub­jects.

Jor­dan has been a geneal­o­gist since 1973; has designed, edit­ed, and pub­lished books and mag­a­zines since 1986; and has designed and pub­lished web­sites since 1995. He is work­ing on becom­ing a cer­ti­fied geneal­o­gist.

Jor­dan has spo­ken at sev­er­al region­al, statewide, and nation­al con­fer­ences, includ­ing the 2009, 2011–2012, and 2014–2017 NGS Fam­i­ly His­to­ry Con­fer­ences and 2014–2016 FGS Con­fer­ences. He was the Birdie Monk Holsclaw Memo­r­i­al Lec­tur­er at the 2011 Nation­al Genealog­i­cal Soci­ety. He was a 2012 recip­i­ent of the Wal­ter Lee Shep­pard Jr. Prize, bestowed annu­al­ly upon geneal­o­gists who demon­strate sound prac­tices and excep­tion­al poten­tial. He received the 2013 award from the North Car­oli­na Genealog­i­cal Soci­ety for Out­stand­ing Con­tri­bu­tions by a Mem­ber.

He served on the board of the North Car­oli­na Genealog­i­cal Soci­ety from 2010–2014 and on the board of the Nation­al Genealog­i­cal Soci­ety from 2010–2019, includ­ing ser­vice as Pres­i­dent (2012–2016), as rep­re­sen­ta­tive to the mul­ti-orga­ni­za­tion Records Preser­va­tion and Access Com­mit­tee, as the chair of the Tech­nol­o­gy Com­mit­tee (2010–2018), and as mem­ber of the gov­er­nance and pub­li­ca­tions com­mit­tees. He wrote the tech­nol­o­gy col­umn for NGS Mag­a­zine for more than ten years (2009–2019).
